Bake/Cook/Make Day Saturday!

Saturdays are set aside to spend some quality, fun time in the kitchen with your child

Supplies Needed For All Projects:  Skewers, Various Fruits like: Strawberries, Apples, Oranges, Bananas and Grapes.  Cheese(cubed), Easy Bake Oven Recipe, Flour, Salt, Water, Bowl, Spoon, Tempera Paint, Plastic squeeze bottles, food coloring, plastic bags, index cards, pictures.

When cooking with children a fun thing to have for them is picture recipe cards.  You can number index cards in the order the recipe calls for and then have pictures of what is needed.  Step by step recipe cards with pictures are fun for kids because even if they can't read they can sure follow pictures.  There is an example below that I found at this website.

Try to explain what everything is to your child your using from ingredients, to measuring cups.

Fruit Kabobs:

Supplies Needed:  Skewers, Fruit, Cheese(Cubed)

Directions:
  • Wash your fruits.
  • Peel your oranges, apples and bananas
  • Cut up your fruits. Your child should be able to help with this project if they use a lettuce knife cutter (which can be found at stores like Target, Jewel). Cut the Strawberries in half(make sure tops are on them), cut your apples in cubes. Slice your bananas.
  • Cut up a chuck of cheese into cubes.
  • Give your child a Skewer and let them make their own fruit kabob.
  • This could be fun for a tea party.
Easy Bake Oven Recipes:  http://www.eborecipes.com/

Supplies Needed:  Whatever you decide to make.  Just remember you don't have to have an easy bake oven to do these recipes. Could use dinosaur or egg shape cookie cutter if making cookies. Could also use for a tea party.

Uncooked Dough:

Supplies Needed:  1cup flour, 1/4 c. salt, 1/2 c. water, food coloring, a bowl and a spoon, plastic tubs or plastic bags

Directions:

Remember to let your child help you.
  1. In the bowl, stir together the flour and salt and then add the water.
  2. Mix the dough with your hands. If it does not hold together, add a little more water.  If it is sticky, add a little flour.  The dough is just right when it does not stick to your hands.
  3. Divide the dough into two or more balls.  Mix a few drops of food coloring into each ball.  For a marbled look, just mix the coloring a little.
  4. If your not going to use the dough right away, store it in separate plastic bags or tubs.  It will last in the fridge for one to two weeks.

Puffy Paint:

Supplies Needed:  1 equal parts of flour, salt, and water, 1 bowl and spoon, liquid tempera paint to desired color, plastic squeeze bottles such as mustard or ketchup containers.

Directions:
  1. Mix equal parts of flour, salt and water in a bowl
  2. add liquid tempera paint for color in desired amount
  3. pour into plastic squeeze bottles
  4. Let your child paint away.
  5. Mixture will harden into a puffy shape.
