Christopher Columbus! Week 6 October 11-17


In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue!

This week is all about Christopher Columbus!



Crafts:

Ship:

Supplies Needed: Colored Construction Paper, Popsicle Stick, Glue
  1. Hand your child a tan piece of paper.
  2. Glue a popsicle stick onto the paper for the mast of the boat.
  3. Draw a half moon onto another piece of paper and cut out for boat.  Glue Boat over bottom portion of stick.  
  4. Next, draw a couple of sails for the boat, cut and glue onto mast.
  5. Using a blue crayon, color in the water or use blue construction paper.
  6. They may use yellow for the sun and white for clouds and so forth.
Map:

Supplies Needed: Brown Paper Bag, Paint, Markers, Yarn
  1. Cut map out of the bag.
  2. Have your child draw the 7 continents.  
  3. They can paint or color in the continents. Let dry.
  4. Roll the map up and tie with yarn.
Hat:
Supplies Needed: Newspapers

Telescope:
Supplies Needed:Paper Towel or Gift Wrap Tube, Construction Paper, Tape, Plastic Wrap, Stickers
  1. Cover bottom of tube with plastic wrap.  Secure with tape.
  2. Next, pick a color of construction paper to wrap around the tube. Secure with tape or glue.  You may use different colors for the scope, especially at the end.
  3. Decorate outside with stamps, glitter, stickers
Boat:
Supplies Needed: Cardboard Box(big enough for your child to sit in), Wrapping Paper Tubes, Tape, Cardboard, Paint or Markers, Construction Paper
  1. Cut off any flaps on box. 
  2. Have your child decorate outside with paint, markers or construction paper.
  3. With the tubes, you can decorate them with whatever your child wants for his mast.
  4. Cut our sails or make a flag to put onto their mast.  
  5. They may place the mast where ever they want in their boat.  Secure it with tape.
Compass
Supplies Needed: Paper Plate, Hole Puncher, Markers, Red Card Stock, Brad, Yarn, 
  1. Take a paper plate and write N,S,E,W onto the plate.
  2. Trace and cut out an arrow out of red card stock.
  3. Secure arrow onto plate with a bard.
  4. Punch a hole in the top.
  5. Cut yarn long enough for compass to hang down from your child's neck.
  6. Your child may decorate their compass if they want.
Puzzle:

Supplies Needed: World Map, Cardboard, Glue, Scissors
  1. Place glue onto a piece of Cardboard and place World Map onto piece.
  2. Paint glue over the top of the map and let dry.
  3. Cut out the shape of your child's puzzle.
Canoe:

Supplies Needed: Brown Construction Paper or Grocery Bag, Crayons, Paint or Markers, Scissors, Yarn, Hole Puncher

Egg Carton Ships:
Supplies Needed: Egg Carton, White Paper, Toothpicks, Glue, Scissors, Paint
  1. Cut out one section of an egg carton.
  2. Paint the boat any color.
  3. Add a toothpick into the middle of the boat.  
  4. Cut out a sail for the boat and glue it to the toothpick.
  5. If you make 3 you will have Columbus's 3 Ships.
  6. Your child can put their boats onto a map and pretend they are Columbus.
3 Ships

Supplies Needed: Blue and White Construction Paper, Crayons, Scissors, Glue Stick, Printable 
  1. Cut out a sea out of the blue paper.  Make waves to the sea.
  2. Glue the sea onto the white paper.
  3. With the 3 ships that you printable out, have them color them and glue them onto the water.
New World Map
Supplies Needed: Brown Paper Bag, Pencil, Scissors, Blue, Brown and Green Water Color Paints, White Craft Paint, Paintbrush, Black Marker

Ocean In A Bottle
Supplies Needed: Empty 2 Liter Bottle, Clear Vegetable Oil, Small Sea Creatures and ship, Water, Funnel, Blue Food Coloring, Glitter, Craft glue, Hot Glue
  1. Make sure bottle is clean and labels are removed.
  2. Fill the bottle half-way with water.
  3. Add a couple drops of blue food coloring and mix up with water.
  4. Add glitter and toys to bottle.
  5. Use the funnel to fill the rest of the bottle with vegetable oil.
  6. Make sure cap in dry on inside and spread glue around inside of cap and screw cap on tight to bottle.
  7. Hot glue the outside of the cap to secure it.
  8. If you turn the bottle on its side your child can watch the boat go back and forth with the waves.
Tube Raft
Supplies Needed: 3 Cardboard Tubes, Glue, Plastic Straw, Blue Paper, Paint
  1. Paint all 3 tubes and let dry.
  2. Lay all 3 tubes down next to each other and apply glue to secure them together. Let Dry.
  3. Put a hole big enough in the middle tube for a straw to fit into.
  4. Apply glue to the bottom of straw and insert in hole. Let dry.
  5. Cut out a sail or flag out paper.
  6. Cut a little slit in top of straw to hold the sail or flag.
  7. Place the boat onto blue paper for water.
Milk Carton Boat

Supplies Needed: Empty Milk Carton, Scissors, Stapler
  1. Staple the spout closed.
  2. Cut the carton in half lengthwise.
  3. Now you have two boats.
  4. These boats float great in the tub and hold lightweight objects.
Raft:
Supplies Needed: Popsicle Sticks, Glue, Brown or Yellow Paint
  1. Lay two sticks down about 2 inches apart.  This is the start of the base of your raft. 
  2. Begin gluing sticks across the other two sticks to make a raft. Let dry.
  3. Let your child paint their raft yellow or brown.
Lid Boat:

Supplies Needed: Margarine Lid, Wire Twistie, Glue, Paper
  1. Make a little hole in the lid for the wire twistie to fit into for the mast.
  2. Cut out a sail or flag out of paper and glue to twistie.
  3. Floats good on water.
Walnut Boat:
Supplies Needed: Empty Walnut Shell, Clay, Toothpick, White Cloth or Paper
  1. Place a small amount of clay into the shell.
  2. Poke a toothpick into the clay.
  3. Glue a small scrap of white cloth or a tiny piece of paper onto the mast for a sail.
  4. Float the boat in a pan of water or in the bathtub.
Steering The Boat:


Supplies Needed: Paper Plate, Scissors, Tape, Glue, 6 Empty TP Tubes, Paint or Markers
  1. Look at picture above, for an example of what a steering wheel looks like.
  2. Cut out little triangles out of the plate like a steering wheel on a columbus's ship. 
  3. Cut 2 slits in the tubes across from each other.
  4. Apply glue to the slit side of tubes and slide onto the plate, in between the triangles.  Let dry.
  5. You may tape the tubes onto if you need too.
  6. Your child may paint and/or decorate their steering wheel.
  7. They may use this in their cardboard ship.
Activities:

  • Boat Race: Plastic Boats, Water.  Have your child place boats in a tub on one side and blow the boats across to the other side to see which boat finishes the race.
  • Marco Polo:  Blindfold a child and have the rest of the children be around the blindfolded child.  The blindfolded child begins to yell Marco and the other children yell Polo.  The blindfolded child must try to find the other child by the sound of they're yelling Polo. Please make sure their's nothing around for the blindfolded children to trip on.
  • Pretend:  Let your child pretend they are Columbus and discovering the world around them.  They can use the different parts of the house for a new country they can discover. Have them pick one of the three boats Columbus sailed with and let them pick a job that they might do on that boat.  Let them make a list of things they would have on that boat.  They will tell you all about each boat above.

  • Journal:  Foam Book, Pen. Have your child write down in their journal all about they're weekly discoveries just like Columbus did in his journal.

    Snacks/Foods:
    • Italian Foods like Spaghetti, Pizza, Etc.
    • Apple Boats: Apple, Triangular Cheese, Toothpicks Cut the apples into quarters.  Cut the cheese into triangles.  Place a toothpick into the apple and slide a piece of cheese onto the other end of toothpick.
    • Deviled-Egg Boats: 12 Hard-Boiled Eggs, 1/2 cup Mayo, 1 tsp. Dry Ground Mustard, 1 tsp. White Vinegar, Carrot Sticks, Fruit Roll-Ups.  Boil the eggs.  When the eggs are cool, peel the eggs and cut eggs in half.  Take out the yoke and add it to a bowl. Mash up the egg yolks. Add mayo, mustard, vinegar, salt, pepper. Stir.  Make sure its to you're liking.  Fill the eggs with the filling. You may top the filling with paprika, if your child wants. Add a carrot stick to the middle of the filling in each egg.  Cut out a sail out of the fruit roll-ups and add to top of carrot stick.
    • Ship Gummies
    • Celery Boats: Celery, Cream Cheese or Peanut Butter, Fruit Roll-Ups, Toothpicks.  Rinse the celery and cut into about 6 inch logs.  Fill the celery with cream cheese or peanut butter.  Add a toothpick to the center of the celery log.  Cut out a sail out of a fruit roll-up and add it the the toothpick.  Your child can add raisins onto the celery if they want to make it look like people are on their ship.
