Child's First Book

  1. Make sure to add three new sentences to your Child's First Book.
  2. For the word Boat, I wrote: My mom/My mom and I went/ My mom and I went on a boat ride.
  3. For the word Down , I wrote: I jumped/ I jumped up/ I jumped up and down.
  4. For the word Sun, I wrote: The sun/The sun was very/ The sun was very hot today.
When your child is reading their book to you or anyone else, make sure not to just tell your child the words.  Have them spell it out, to see if they can get the word and/or see if they can pronounce it out.

Index Card Project:
  1. Write the words Boat, Down, Sun on index cards.
  2. On the other side glue a picture of that word or have them draw a picture.
  3. You should have a nice pile of words now.
 Key-chain Index Cards:
  • Don't forget to add these 3 new words to your key-chain cards.
Go Fish Game:
  • Remember to add their words to their Go Fish Game.
Little Foam Books:
  • After adding the words to your new little foam books, your child will have 6 books to practice in now.
  • How is your child doing on the rest of their books?  You may need to make them more books, if they fill the other ones up.
Up and Down:
  1. To teach these words, you can post-it note the word Up on the ceiling.  And the word Down, on the floor.
  2. Look around outside and have your child point out things that are Up and Down like the sky, clouds, tree branches, birds, planes, sun, moon are Up.  Things like fall leaves, feet, grass, bugs, sea, cars are Down.  They can say I spy a Plane that is Up and have them spell the word Up or I spy the grass that is Down and spell the word Down.
  3. Play Chutes and Ladders because things go up and down.  Have them spell it out if they go down the slide or up the ladder.
  4. Play a song that every time they hear the word they have to stand up and if they are standing up when they hear the word they have to sit down.  For Example:  My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.  They start out by standing.  When they hear my bonnie they sit down.  Then when they hear my bonnie again they stand.  It gets very funny if you tell them that they have to do it every time they hear a B word.
  5. Make a collage of things that go up and down.
Shapes:
  • Do a memory game with shapes or add it to their other memory game.
  • Make flash cards with the index cards.
Colors:
  1. Start out by teaching your children the primary colors: Red, Blue, Yellow
  2. Click Here to find out primary and secondary colors
  3. Make flash cards for them with index cards.
  4. Make a Foam Book(like their first book) for their colors.  Make a circle with a Blue crayon on the top of page.  In the middle Write the word Blue in the color Blue and then search for something Blue in a magazine and glue it on the bottom of the page.  On a white piece of paper, glue all the blue items on that page and write the word Blue on top.  On a second do the Red color and on a third page the Yellow color.
  5. Play I spy for each color.  For example: I spy the Blue sky.
  6. Great website for teaching colors and shapes: Click Here
  7. For snacks : Eat things that are these 3 colors.  Like corn, blueberries, apples, bananas, strawberries, watermelon, tomatoes, lemonade, yellow potatoes, cherries, spaghetti, yogurt, gummies, jello, cereal,  add food coloring to milk or food.
  8. Could dress all in Blue, Red or Yellow or all three.
  9. Have them color, paint or use markers to draw things that are these colors.
  10. Could make a memory game for these colors or add to their other memory game.  Use the color Blue and write out the word Blue and so on.
  11. Play CandyLand.
