Wacky Wednesday: Apples, Apples and More Apples



Apple Magnet


Wacky Wednesdays are a little break in the week, geared away from the weekly theme.  It lets the children have a little added fun. Your kids will love it when you say "Hey, guess what tomorrow is?  It's Wacky Wednesday!" Remember to have fun yourself. 


Apples, Apples and More Apples




Supplies Needed: All types and colors of apples


  1. Buy as many different types of apples as you can.  Make sure you remember the names of each type. 
  2. To learn about the different types of apples click here
  3. Cut one of each kind of apple in halves. Keep the seeds from each apple, so your child can look at the seeds from each apple. Have your child examine each apple have them taste, smell, look at the skins and seeds. 
  4. Instead of cutting the apple down from the stem, turn the apple sideways and cut it. Show them the star shape inside the apple.  They will love the fact their apple has a star inside it.
  5. They can now eat their apples, they can eat them alone or dip them in chocolate, peanut butter, carmel or cheese
  6. Save the seeds for later project.
Caterpillar Apple



Supplies Needed: Red and green foam, googlie eyes, red marker
  1. On a red piece of foam, draw an apple shape and cut it out.
  2. On a green piece of foam, draw a caterpillar and an apple stem and cut them out.
  3. Glue gogglie eyes onto the caterpillar and draw a smile with a red marker.
  4. Glue stem onto apple
  5. Cut a small slit into the upper right corner and slide the caterpillar in, bottom part first.  Glue caterpillar in place in back. 
Tissue Apples


Supplies Needed: Small, round balloons, petroleum jelly, red tissue paper, liquid starch

  1. Inflate some small, round balloons just enough to make them the size of apples.  Tie them closed to keep the air in.
  2. Cover the balloons with a light coat of petroleum jelly
  3. Stick on strips of red tissue paper that have been dipped in liquid starch.
  4. Let the balloons sit for 24 hours.
  5. Then, pop the balloons with a needle and remove them through the openings where the balloon stems were.
  6. Hang the apples from a tree, a mobile, or window rods.
Apple Art Work


Supplies Needed: Apples, paint, plain shirt or plain fabric bag
  1. Give your child a plain shirt or plain fabric bag to start.
  2. Cut some apples in half. Try cutting them both ways: up and down and sideways.
  3. Have your child put some paint over the meat part of the sliced apple.
  4. Then, have them place the apple onto the shirt or bag.  
  5. Repeat.  They can use the same color or different colors.
  6. Save the seeds for a later projects.
Apple Cards


Supplies Needed: Card stock, apple, paint, markers
  1. Fold a piece of card stock in half, like a card.
  2. Cut an apple in half.
  3. Using a paint brush, apply paint onto the apple.  Use can different colors on one apple.
  4. Place the paint apple onto the front of the card. Let dry.
  5. Have your child write something to someone they want to mail or give the card too.
  6. Save the seeds for later.
HomeMade AppleSauce


Supplies Needed: Apples, cinnamon, sugar, graham crackers (make applesauce)
  • For easy instructions for making applesauce click here
  • When the applesauce is done, dip in graham crackers, so it tastes like applepie
  • Save the seeds for later.
Carmel Apples


Supplies Needed: Apples, carmel apple kit, walnuts (make your own: 6 apples, 1 pound of caramel candies, 2 tablespoons of water, 6 ice-cream sticks) 
  • Follow instructions on carmel bag kit
Apple Seed Mosiac


Supplies Needed: Construction Paper, Apple Seeds, Glue, Crayons or Markers
  • Save the seeds from all the apple projects today. Rinse them clean. Dry off.
  • Let your child take the apple seeds and have them make their own artwork with them.
Egg Carton Caterpillar


Supplies Needed: Egg Carton, paint, pipe cleaners, marker
  1. Cut the top off the egg carton.  Now cut the egg carton down the middle so you have 2 pieces, 6 cups each.
  2. Have your child paint one egg carton half.  You can use all sorts of colors. Let dry.
  3. Cut a pipe cleaner into 10 pieces. (8 legs and 2 antennae) 
  4. Place the legs and antennae into the caterpillar.
  5. Glue on eyes and draw a mouth. 
  6. If you want you can glue a picture of your child on the front, for the face of the caterpillar.
Apple Napkin Ring Holder


Supplies Needed: Red, Green and Brown foam, Red pipe cleaner, googlie eyes, hole puncher
  1. Cut out an apple shape out of the red foam.
  2. Cut out a green leaf and caterpillar out of green foam.
  3. Cut out a stem out of brown foam.
  4. Glue the apple pieces together. 
  5. Glue eye on caterpillar. Cut a small slit by stem of apple and slide and glue in caterpillar.
  6. Punch a hole on each side of the apple.
  7. Put about 4 inch red pipe cleaner through each hole and wrap the ends of pipe cleaner around each other.  
  8. You can now roll up a napkin into the holder.  If you want you can have your child make apple prints on cloth napkins to use in their napkin ring holder.
Apple Magnet


Supplies Needed: Jar or frozen juice can lid, felt or craft foam, pipe cleaner, wiggle eyes, magnet, craft glue, scissors
  1. Start out by tracing lid onto the felt or craft foam.  You can use red, yellow or green to create different kinds of apples.
  2. Cut out the circle and glue it to one side of the lid.
  3. Cut a 1-inch piece from brown pipe cleaner.  Glue one end of this onto the back of the lid to be the  apples stem.
  4. Using felt or craft foam, cut out a leaf or two and glue them onto the front top of the apple.
  5. Cut another piece of chenille stem, about 1-2 inches long, whatever color you want your worm to be.  Glue it onto the middle of the apple, so it looks like a worm poking its head out of the apple.  Don't forget to add a wiggle eye.  Let the apple lay flat until the glue is dry.
  6. Finally, glue a magnet on the back of the apple.  Once the glue is dry, hang up your magnet where ever you choose.
Apple Tree


Supplies Needed:  Brown, Orange and Green construction paper, red finger paint, Scissors
  1. Trace your child's hand on green paper for tree and cut out.
  2. Trace your child's lower arm on brown paper for trunk and cut out.
  3. Glue the tree and trunk onto a piece of orange construction paper.
  4. Let your child use these finger tips to make apples. 
  5. They can also use other color paints to make other scenery.
Games
  • Play Hot Potato, except use an apple
  • Children can pretend they are caterpillars looking for an apple hidden in the house
  • Apple Toss: Roll up red, green and yellow socks into a ball.  Then let your child toss the apple socks into a basket across the room.

  • Apple Juice
  • Apple Ice Cream: There is apple ice cream at stores now.  You can also buy vanilla ice cream and poor Smuckers toppings Apple Cinnamon flavor.  I found mine at Wal-mart with ice cream stuff.
