Tuesday Tips!

Family Mealtime:

  • Mealtime is a time to connect with your kids.
  • Eating together as a family gives you a chance to spend time with your kids and get to know them better.
  • The more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink, or use drugs.
  • Studies have shown that kids tend to be healthier, have positive social skills and perform better in school.
  • Include your kids on the planning of the meals, so they feel they have taken part in it. If you have more than one kid, each kid can choose a day or something in the meal they want.
  • Start eating at the table when your kids are very young to get them used to eating at the table.
  • Eating at the table everyday is a good idea.
  • Make sure you toddler thinks they are a big person too.
  • Try to have the meals at the same time everyday, to help keep a routine.
  • Find crafts that can be used as table decorations or place settings, so your child can show them off and feel special.  This also gives you something to talk about at the table.
  • It's a great idea not to watch TV or have your cell phones at the table to avoid distractions.
  • Make meal time a fun time to spend time with your child.  Ask them questions like:
  1. What's your favorite part of the meal or the day?
  2. What would you like to do after the meal?
  3. What is your favorite veggies?
  4. What would you like for supper tomorrow?
  5. Tell jokes.
  6. Sing Silly songs.
  • Make sure each child gets their time to talk and not just the adults or just one child.
  • Your child loves to help you getting supper ready and setting the table. They are never to young not to help you. There is always something they can do.
  • Have your child help you after eating too.  They can help clear the table, help wash dishes.  Wipe the table down.  Pick up any crumbs that fell to the floor.
